Hardy Heritage Series

The Heritage Series of Fly Rods and Reels from Hardy Alnwick. For well over a century, Hardy has a storied tradition as being the manufacturer of some of the finest game fishing tackle in the world - the name is synonymous with quality and excellence. Such reputations are not acquired easily, but it has never faltered throughout the Company's long history.

That history began in 1872, when William Hardy established himself as a gunsmith in his home town of Alnwick, Northumberland. A year later he was joined by his brother, John James, and the Hardy Brothers Partnership came into being. The high quality guns which they sold ranged from shotguns to pistols. However, despite their success, the Hardy brothers' passion for fishing soon dictated a change in direction. Their favorite hobby became their profession, and the reputation of Hardy rods and reels was born.

Heritage Split Cane Bamboo Fly Fishing Rods
Gladstone and bespoke Palakona rods are created in Alnwick by Callum Gladstone, a master rod builder with over two decades of experience. Experience. Expertise. Passion. Sublime rods for a sublime angling experience. It was nearly a century ago that Hardy invented a planing machine that revolutionized the construction of split-bamboo rods. The straight, delicate, yet immensely strong bamboo that was created, was called Palakona and has been the blank material used in the rods ever since.

Heritage Fly Fishing Reels
The Hardy Perfect. The reel that needs no introduction. It is perhaps the most famous product ever to have left the Hardy factory in Alnwick. A timeless design utilizing the most modern technology is once again made in Alnwick, England - the Hardy Perfect really does typify the Heritage range.

The Hardy St. George Salmon was first introduced in 1920, then, in 1921, the design was changed to incorporate the ‘silent wind in' action. The St George Salmon remained in production for 5 years and now, 90 years later, Hardy is manufacturing the St. George Salmon reels in it's Alnwick, England Factory.

Hardy Reel Designer, Charlie Norris said-

"The St George Salmon reels were incredibly advanced for their day. Using a mid arbour spool, these reels were also fitted as standard with such innovative features as a circular revolving line guard, twin handles and compensating check."
"Today, we have taken the same features and incorporated them into a fully bar stock version of the reel which is available with a mid arbour #9/10 spool and a standard arbour #11/12 spool."
