There is a sense of exhilaration when you select a pattern out of your fly box, you fish it, and the fish attack it. There is a further sense of accomplishment and excitement when you create your own flies and the fish devour those. The art of tying flies is an extremely challenging and rewarding activity. It's a pursuit I have consistently labored over for more than 25 years; studying the hatches, scouring entomology books, and testing flies onstream, are all specific stages in this creation process. For the flies featured in this section, you will find that the leg work has been done regarding their efficiency. I have tested these flies endlessly and still use them today, with great success. I have designed flies for the Orvis Company for almost a dozen years now and the patterns listed in this section have been selected for the Orvis product catalog/website. Just remember, my repertoire is almost endless so......... just ask if you have something specific you need; custom work is always an option. The patterns featured in this section are the original versions which are tied by Dave Hise and the Orvis versions which are tied by the Orvis tyers. Please allow at least 2 weeks (possibly more) for custom work by Dave Hise.
I was honored to receive this note from Tom Rosenbauer a few years back. Tom is a real inspiration and I am extremely fond of his work:
Dave,
You are truly the most innovative fly tier out there today, and what's even better, you know how to design flies that appeal to fisherman as well as fish. I saw your latest submissions- just brilliant! I mostly love the San Juan/egg combination and that egg-eating sculpin.
