Michigan Steelheadin'

Casters Annual Steelhead Trip

Join us as we travel to western Michigan, where we will fish some of the finest steelhead waters in the world; the Muskegon, Pere Marquette, Rogue, and Manistee rivers. Spey and traditional fly fishing gear will be used to accomplish various techniques; which include indicator nymphing, bottom bouncing, and/or swinging streamers. Three days of fishing will be split into drift or jet boat, and walk and wade trips. One day we may fish a medium-sized river and the next a river almost the width of a football field. This will be based on local conditions and the guide's recommendations as to where the best fishing opportunities will be.

Steelies or "chromers", as they are affectionately known, are an exceptional fish. They are known to be extremely aggressive, consuming almost anything that comes across their path; salmon fry, sculpins, small trout, and other forage fish are prime targets, as well as, many aquatic nymphs, larvae, and crustaceans. Some begin their migration out of the Great Lakes up the rivers in the fall but many arrive in late winter/early spring. It is at this time that they attempt to complete their annual spawning ritual. This ritual usually lasts from February through May and "prime time" is mid March through mid April. Late March/early April offers great angling opportunities due to the fact that many of the rivers will have steelies at all stages of their spawn; pre-spawn, spawn, and post-spawn. The pre-spawn and post-spawn fish can be voracious. Join in on the excitement and possibly catch the fish of a lifetime!
